Multimedia Story Draft

Come with me on my 5040 peak hiking adventure, located on Vancouver island between Port Alberni and Tofino.

Here are some statistics of 5040 peak: 8.4 km out-and-back with 5040 feet in elevation. The average quoted time to complete this hike ranged from 4 to 7 hours.

Normally, people plan to camp at cobalt lake and make the trip span to 2 days but my friend and I have decided to wake up at 5am and complete it in one day.

This will be my friend and I’s first time hiking 5040 peak! We have some friends hiking a week prior to us so we will use this to our advantage to ask them to report the conditions. Having said that, the mountain is prone to blizzards so we must prepare accordingly.

This includes: hiking boots, crampons, gators, toque, gloves, pants, fleece, rain jacket, bear spray, bear bell, whistle, first aid kit, knife, matches, headlamp, compass, portable charger, water and a lot of snacks.

The shape of my story will be my journey from the mountain base to the summit and a reflection for when the hike is completed.

The kind of media I will provide to report my adventure includes pictures with necessary text overlay, videos (some with VoiceOver and some just view captures). I will curate this media to align with Mayers principles of multimedia learning. Specifically following the redundancy principle, coherence & contiguity principle. These principles will be implemented respectively by, avoiding repetition of text and VoiceOver and instead complement the voice over with text; making sure edits are kept to a minimum, reducing congestion with text overlay in photos; and lastly, providing visuals connected to meaning.

There were 3 challenges faced during my adventure:

  1. GPS Route: AllTrails was navigating us certain ways but due to heavy snow fall, we had to divert our route to continue safely.
  2. Wildlife: Along the way there were many cougar tracks followed by blood trails. We continued with caution and being loud/disruptive to show human presence.
  3. Muscle fatigue: My friend decided it would be a great idea to workout legs the day before the hike so her quadriceps kept spasming therefore it was necessary to take breaks, massage the muscle and keep hydrated in order to continue. This was a learning opportunity, do not target a leg based workout before an extensive hike.

  1. Your 5040 Peak adventure really does sound epic! I like how you broke it down with the stats, the gear, and even the multimedia principles, that’s such a smart way to frame it. And the part about your friend hitting leg day right before the climb is hilarious, it makes the whole story even more memorable.
